A new stage of the Partnership

With the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding in autumn 2024, the UZH and the Museum Rietberg Zurich (MRZ) are entering a new phase of institutional collaboration. This agreement marks a significant step forward: it formalizes a longstanding relationship and establishes a structural foundation for sustained interdisciplinary exchange between academia and the museum world.

For many years, UZH researchers – particularly from the disciplines of Art History, the Institute of Asian and Oriental Studies, Archaeology, History, and the Ethnographic Museum – have worked closely with the Museum Rietberg . Numerous joint projects, exhibitions, and events have emerged from this collaboration, highlighting the productive interplay between academic inquiry and curatorial practice.

Chair of East Asian Art History

The newly launched phase of this partnership will be coordinated by the Chair for East Asian Art History. In assuming this role, the Chair not only represents the UZH institutionally, but also continues a meaningful academic legacy: it honours and advances the pioneering work of Professor Dr. Helmut Brinker, the first holder of the Chair, whose close ties to the Museum Rietberg significantly shaped the foundations of this partnership.

The partnership consciously builds on this tradition and expands it: it provides a formal framework for coordinated research initiatives, joint teaching formats, and public programs. In doing so, it not only strengthens existing collaborations but also opens the door for innovative approaches that more deeply integrate research, education, and society.
